 Rothwell Town (u13)

3 : 2

 Gloucester City (u13)

With perfect weather for football (in my opinion!) Rothwell welcomed Gloucester. After 120 miles of travelling, Gloucester were caught a bit cold with the start Rothwell made. Chances were created and squandered before Rothwell finally made the break through, a corner was swung in to the box, only to be cleared straight up. Callum Traynor was waiting to pounce with a looping header over the keeper, a cracking header for one of the smallest players in the box! Gloucester stuck to task and worked hard but the score remained 1-0 at the break. The start second half was more of the same. Rothwell were playing football in the Gloucester half, keeping the ball trying to get it down and play, but with Gloucester looking threatening on the break a second goal was needed. It duly arrived with a stunning drive from Charlie O’Reilly. The ball was won on the edge of the box by Dean Henderson, but would not drop quickly enough for a strike, Gloucester cleared, but only to O’Reilly, who thundered a shot into the top pokey from 20 yards. Rothwell were cruising to victory, or so we thought! The second goal seemed to spur Gloucester on. Straight from the restart, they played the ball out wide right, a lovely cross followed and a sublime finish from Max Harper-Emerson, coming in off the left wing made it 2-1. Rothwell needed to re-group, but were not given the chance. Gloucester played the ball down the left flank; a cross-come shot ricocheted into Jack Ashmead’s path who coolly slotted the ball past the outstretched arm of Harry Doherty-Gooderham, 2-2. Rothwell looked shocked after squandering a two goal lead and Gloucester started to get a foothold in the game. Rothwell soon regrouped and went pressing for the winner, the woodwork was rattled twice, Dean Henderson hit the post and Aidan Peden the bar, a goal was not forthcoming. Late in the game Rothwell won a corner, the ball landed at Charlie Thomas’ feet, with his back to goal. He laid the ball back to the corner taker Charlie O’Reilly who swung in a near post cross which was coolly converted by super sub Jordan Watt, a tactical master class, or so the coaches would have us believe! The game finished 3-2 to the home team, and on the balance of play Rothwell deserved their victory. Many thanks to the Gloucester players, coaches and parents as the game was played in the spirit football should be. The return fixture should be a game to watch!

Match Report

Gloucester won the cup group 6 but this was a much closer game than the score line suggests and halfway through the second half with the score delicately poised at 2-1 to the visitors and with the home side on top the Gloucester keeper Matt Sutton made a great point blank save from Jack Robson to keep his side level. Then just moments later they went forward and scored a third and killer goal and two late strikes made it a convincing win in the end but nonetheless a much tighter game than was played out by the same two team last week. The first half started fairly even with the two strong Gloucester forwards causing mischief but missing the target and the Hibs front line also pressing for an opening. In the end it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 20 minutes following an attack down the Hibs left hand side. The Hibs then replied just before the interval when Tom Gardner attacked on the right and shot home powerfully from the edge of the box. However they were level for only a few minutes as Gloucester took the lead from a corner in first half injury time. The second half was an exciting game but in the end the attacking flair of the visitors gradually gained them dominance and they were deserved winners but the score line was definitely a hard one on the Hibs. Thanks to wayne and colin for their support and encouragement to the Hibs team and for bringing the goalkeeper kit all washed and smelling of lenor,

Match Report

After some early pressure from the away team, Gloucester's first corner by Jake Hanley was headed in by Ryan Kline. Kline added a second almost straight away with a fine individual run. Further chances were spurned by the home team before a break led to a low shot by Clayton Dee to make it 3-0. Leamington then had a good claim for a penalty missed by the usually accurate referee. Matt Sutton then had to make a good save from a Leamington free kick. However just before half time the home team added another. A passing move between Kline and Mitch Cornock gave James Wilce the chance to hit home. The second half began scrappily but then the home team continued where they left off. Dee grabbed his second, Kline scored two more and Gloucester's great passing performance was rounded off with a low shot by Cornock to make it 8-0 at the end. Leamington played some great passing football themselves but with a few players missing, they could not compete with a Gloucester team who have had a run of great performances of late. Leamington will provide a more difficult test in the teams' next encounter.
